Supporting Adolescents and Teens

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!

Adolescence is a critical stage where teens are forming their identities and gaining the independence necessary for adulthood. Naturally, this can create tension between teens and parents. For teens to succeed, they need to practice independence, self-reliance, and responsibility, while parents balance guidance with granting more freedom. Despite their best efforts, both parties can struggle to transition from old roles to new ones. Teens’ desire for independence may seem like boundary-pushing, while parents’ limits can be perceived as control.

Seeking professional assistance can help navigate this challenging stage. I work to understand the aims and challenges faced by both teens and parents. My goal is to prevent teens from recklessly pushing limits and parents from over-asserting control, ultimately benefiting both.

Areas of Expertise

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Building self-esteem and confidence
  • Social and communication skills
  • Dating and relationship skills
  • Parent-teen communication
  • Life skills for independence
  • Peer, sibling, and family conflicts
  • Substance use and addiction (alcohol, marijuana, stimulants, opioids, prescription medications)
  • Finding direction
  • Adoption issues related to identity

My Approach

In working with teens, I strive to help them develop healthy self-esteem and appropriate social and relationship skills. I build on their existing relationships with parents, teachers, and peers. I offer specific skills for healthy dating and prepare them for adult romantic relationships. Drawing from my experience with adults, I anticipate challenges they may face and guide them in making good choices.

While much of my work is with the individual teen, I maintain confidentiality within realistic limits. I also believe in involving parents when appropriate. This can include joint sessions, providing brief updates, or collaborating with the family as a whole.
